Summary

The brand new unmissable crime thriller from Holly Jackson, best-selling, award-winning author of the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder trilogy。

Eight hours。
Six friends。
One sniper 。 。 。

Eighteen year old Red and her friends are on a road trip in an RV, heading to the beach for Spring Break。 It’s a long drive but spirits are high。 Until the RV breaks down in the middle of nowhere。 There’s no mobile phone reception and nobody around to help。 And as the wheels are shot out, one by one, the friends realise that this is no accident。 There’s a sniper out there in the dark watching them and he knows exactly who they are。 One of the group has a secret that the sniper is willing to kill for。

A game of cat-and-mouse plays out as the group desperately tries to get help and to work out which member of the group is the target。 Buried secrets are forced to light in the cramped, claustrophobic setting of the RV, and tensions within the group will reach deadly levels。 Not everyone will survive the night。

Holly Jackson grabs our eyeballs from the jump with this one。 I was immediately there on that road trip with the whole crew and stayed there with them all night。 I basically read this book in real time。 Red is an unreliable narrator who has secrets。 Then again, so does everyone else in that RV at the time。 Her best friend Maddy, their friends Simon and Arthur, and their chaperones on this doomed spring break trip, Maddy’s older brother, Oliver and his girlfriend, Reyna。 Every。 Last。 One。 When th Holly Jackson grabs our eyeballs from the jump with this one。 I was immediately there on that road trip with the whole crew and stayed there with them all night。 I basically read this book in real time。 Red is an unreliable narrator who has secrets。 Then again, so does everyone else in that RV at the time。 Her best friend Maddy, their friends Simon and Arthur, and their chaperones on this doomed spring break trip, Maddy’s older brother, Oliver and his girlfriend, Reyna。 Every。 Last。 One。 When they get lost on the way, they find themselves on the backroads with a flat tire in the middle of absolute nowhere。 However, they soon find that the flat tire is no accident。 Within moments of fixing it, all four of their tires are immediately shot out。 Someone in the fields around them has a gun。 The group soon finds themselves stuck in the RV trying to come up with a plan on how to escape。 Until they begin to hear a voice from a walkie talkie that tells them that they have until morning to reveal the identity of the person with a certain secret。 But who is it? As the night wears on, the group realizes that everyone in the RV seems to be hiding something。Red has a feeling that this has to do with her plan。 The plan she has to be able to get her dad help。 A plan to help Red herself go to college, something that has been out of her reach since her mother, the Chief of Police, was executed in cold blood a couple years before。 But there’s no way they could know, right? And she can’t reveal the plan。 The plan is the only thing she has that can help her, the only way she can get revenge for her mom。 However, as things begin to unravel and logic takes a vacation, long hidden secrets begin to chip away at the group。 Before long, they realize that fate has unknowingly woven its sticky web around the six friends, and one will not be able to get out of its clutches alive。 A lot of the characters in this book were sympathetic, with one major exception and I absolutely hated them with a passion。 I ended up yelling at my Kindle a few times in utter exasperation that they were getting away with their irrational and harmful behavior。 I love books like this, ones that bring out my passionate side。 I absolutely adored it。 Thank you so much Random House, Delacourte Press, and Netgalley for the advanced copy of Five Survive by Holly Jackson in exchange for this fair and honest review。 。。。more

I absolutely loved Holly Jackson's first novel, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, and while I didn't like the sequels as much, I really do enjoy her writing, so I was excited to get the ARC for her latest novel, Five Survive。 Some of the people I follow on Goodreads were giving it good early reviews, so even though the plot sounded a bit far-fetched, I gave it a go。 Let me tell you: I was annoyed/underwhelmed/irritated/dissatisfied/insert-negative-emotion-here throughout the first 80 percent of I absolutely loved Holly Jackson's first novel, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, and while I didn't like the sequels as much, I really do enjoy her writing, so I was excited to get the ARC for her latest novel, Five Survive。 Some of the people I follow on Goodreads were giving it good early reviews, so even though the plot sounded a bit far-fetched, I gave it a go。 Let me tell you: I was annoyed/underwhelmed/irritated/dissatisfied/insert-negative-emotion-here throughout the first 80 percent of this book。 I only finished it because I need to get my NetGalley rate up (IYKYK)。 But! I'm glad I finished it, because the end is the best part。 Jackson doesn't tie everything up in a nice little bow, but what she does is so satisfying after going through all of that early garbage。 The premise here is hugely implausible, beyond the suspension of disbelief (at least to me), and at no point in the novel did it begin to make any more sense。 Secondly, I found most of the characters to be some degree of dislikable, even Red at some points, which I don't think was Jackson's intention。 She just kind of irritated me。 And finally, I get that this is YA and they're teens, but they kept making the dumbest decisions possible, over and over again, and I was getting so fed up! Ugh。 So, all in all, the end saved this book from a horrible rating。 But my final thought is that I really do like Jackson's writing and storytelling—to me, this just wasn't a story worth telling。 。。。more

The red dot was scary, the suspense was good, and I still can't wrap my head around how this story happened over 8 hours。 I just thought there could be a bit more cuz the whole reveal and reason were a bit underwhelming。 Also the characters just weren't very likable and I also didn't like how the book ended with the attempted redemption of Arthur。 The red dot was scary, the suspense was good, and I still can't wrap my head around how this story happened over 8 hours。 I just thought there could be a bit more cuz the whole reveal and reason were a bit underwhelming。 Also the characters just weren't very likable and I also didn't like how the book ended with the attempted redemption of Arthur。 。。。more

Wow。 I couldn’t put this book down the second I got it。 I wasHooked and couldn’t stop turning the page。 It was so different to Holly Jackson’s AGGTM series, it was darker, more mature。 I could not believe the twist it was absolutely crazy but it made sense。 That’s what I love about her books the plot twist isn’t the thing that makes the book good。 The entire book was addictive and the characters, backstory made it a 5 star read for me。 I will forever read holly Jackson’s books。 I won’t ever stop Wow。 I couldn’t put this book down the second I got it。 I wasHooked and couldn’t stop turning the page。 It was so different to Holly Jackson’s AGGTM series, it was darker, more mature。 I could not believe the twist it was absolutely crazy but it made sense。 That’s what I love about her books the plot twist isn’t the thing that makes the book good。 The entire book was addictive and the characters, backstory made it a 5 star read for me。 I will forever read holly Jackson’s books。 I won’t ever stop talking about this book。 。。。more

Five Survive gave me the same heart racing feeling that A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and Good Girl, Bad Blood did。 After disliking the finale of that trilogy, this book reminded me of just how much I love Holly Jackson’s writing。 After a group of friends’ RV breaks down, they quickly realize that it was a deliberate sabotage。 Stranded and the target of a sniper, the group of friends are faced with a life or death situation。 One of them has a secret that someone is willing to kill for, they need Five Survive gave me the same heart racing feeling that A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and Good Girl, Bad Blood did。 After disliking the finale of that trilogy, this book reminded me of just how much I love Holly Jackson’s writing。 After a group of friends’ RV breaks down, they quickly realize that it was a deliberate sabotage。 Stranded and the target of a sniper, the group of friends are faced with a life or death situation。 One of them has a secret that someone is willing to kill for, they needed to come forward and the rest can go free。 This was a tense rollercoaster ride, but I loved almost every minute of it。 (Oliver’s extremist attitude got annoying fast)。 There were a lot of twist and turns, and I was never able to fully nail down what was coming next。 I call this a big win when it comes to mysteries。 。。。more

This was decent。。。a little far-fetched for me。 6 teenagers set out on a Spring Break trip in a borrowed RV and get lost on their first overnight stop。 They quickly find that someone is out to get them when they realize that their flat tire was no accident。 Someone is trying to scare them and possibly kill one or more of them。 The story focuses on trying to figure out who has is holding the secret that the killer/stalker wants to know and how the characters are going to survive in the process。 Wh This was decent。。。a little far-fetched for me。 6 teenagers set out on a Spring Break trip in a borrowed RV and get lost on their first overnight stop。 They quickly find that someone is out to get them when they realize that their flat tire was no accident。 Someone is trying to scare them and possibly kill one or more of them。 The story focuses on trying to figure out who has is holding the secret that the killer/stalker wants to know and how the characters are going to survive in the process。 While it is suspenseful, it just wasn't what I had hoped。 I did not predict the ending though, which is a positive。 I would recommend, but won't rave about it。 。。。more

Synopsis: A group of 6 friends are trapped in an RV by a sniper who won't let them go until he gets the information he wants。 My Review: Overall I liked the story, loved the ending, but struggled with the pacing。 For a YA novel it had some pretty gruesome imagery。 For how high-stakes the synopsis was this book was a slow burn。 Like, setting fire to damp cardboard sort of slow burn。 The first half of the book the dialogue dragged the story along and I struggled through one chapter at a time。 Then Synopsis: A group of 6 friends are trapped in an RV by a sniper who won't let them go until he gets the information he wants。 My Review: Overall I liked the story, loved the ending, but struggled with the pacing。 For a YA novel it had some pretty gruesome imagery。 For how high-stakes the synopsis was this book was a slow burn。 Like, setting fire to damp cardboard sort of slow burn。 The first half of the book the dialogue dragged the story along and I struggled through one chapter at a time。 Then around the halfway point the "thrill" in this thriller started to pick up。 I read the second half of this book in one sitting because it was edge-of-your-seat action packed。 I enjoyed the ending and how everything fell into place。This was my first read by Holly Jackson and I'm interested to see how 'A Good Girls Guide to Murder' compares。*I received a free copy from NetGalley and Random House Children's Publishing。 I'm leaving an honest review voluntarily。* 。。。more

I commend Holly Jackson for her ability to maintain such high levels of tension in a story that takes place entirely inside a 31-foot RV。 It was such a unique version of a locked door mystery, and the tight quarters only ramp up the suspense for explosive moments of action。 Holly Jackson is very skilled at her craft, and reading this book makes it clear。 I really felt the full force of each character's experience, and I found myself rooting strongly for (and sometimes against!) them as they tried to survive eight harrowing hours together。 I found the resolution of the story to be satisfying as well。 Everything fit well into the story and delivered some genuine surprises and emotions without feeling rushed or forced。 I look forward to diving into the rest of her work! If you’re looking for a tense, edge-of-your-seat thriller that teeters on the edge of madness, I recommend this book wholeheartedly! Five Survive is Holly Jackson's latest new-adult thriller that follows 6 teens as they take off towards their final spring break as high school students。 Packed into a 31 foot RV, the 6 teens are made up of Red - our narrator, Maddy, Oliver, Simon, Anthony, and Reyna。 Red is the outcast, her status as Maddy's best friend the only reason why the crew is in an RV and not flying to the coast。 Maddy protects her, ensures no one asks about her mother, and tries to make sure she is always included。 Ex Five Survive is Holly Jackson's latest new-adult thriller that follows 6 teens as they take off towards their final spring break as high school students。 Packed into a 31 foot RV, the 6 teens are made up of Red - our narrator, Maddy, Oliver, Simon, Anthony, and Reyna。 Red is the outcast, her status as Maddy's best friend the only reason why the crew is in an RV and not flying to the coast。 Maddy protects her, ensures no one asks about her mother, and tries to make sure she is always included。 Except, this trip might be one where Red wishes she wasn't included。 As darkness descends they find themselves lost and with a blown out tire。 What begins as dread for a night stuck in the RV with no cell service soon begins full blown fear。 Someone is out there and they know exactly who is inside the RV。 One of them has a secret and one of them won't make it out alive。I flip flopped on my rating for this book, I think it's a 4-star read for some, but ultimately it was a 3-star read for me。 Red is a fantastic, brooding character, but her ties to the group are fraught and the improbability of them all being friends was too difficult to believe。 This isn't how friends operate。 Then you mix in their secrets? No, maybe one or two friends would have big secrets, but not all of them and not to the extremes。 The mob/cartel storyline that ties to Red's mom is done well, but seems so far-fetched for the age group of the read and almost too adult in theming。 It doesn't feel like part of the story, almost like the rest of the book was written, but a bad guy and a reasoning was needed。 Jackson is a fantastic writer, but this needed to be either a new-adult book or an adult book, it's a little bit too much of both。I love Holly Jackson's writing, the concept here was great, but it was a miss for me。 。。。more

I was very excited to pick up this book because I was curious to see what the author would come up with after a very successful series of books, and because, of the ones I have read so far I have really enjoyed what she has written。 Five Survive was a little slower to kick in than I expected and whilst Red was a fascinating character she wasn’t the easiest to navigate the start of the story with, thankfully it didn’t take too long before I was completely hooked by what was happening。I just loved I was very excited to pick up this book because I was curious to see what the author would come up with after a very successful series of books, and because, of the ones I have read so far I have really enjoyed what she has written。 Five Survive was a little slower to kick in than I expected and whilst Red was a fascinating character she wasn’t the easiest to navigate the start of the story with, thankfully it didn’t take too long before I was completely hooked by what was happening。I just loved the set-up of this, six friends shut in a small space, and a desperate need to find the secret that is the key to their survival, it made for some thrilling edge-of-my-seat reading。 The book is broken up into sections by the hour and it really adds to the fast-paced nature of the story, as everything happens in eight hours of one evening。 The tension was wonderful all of these elements come together to create a chaotic maelstrom of an atmosphere, as the characters slowly start to unravel and become their worst selves。I won’t say too much about the plot but whilst some things felt obvious, I realised that I had no idea who was behind the danger they were in and what secret they were looking for。 It made for some pretty shocking revelations as the puzzle pieces started to fit together and I could not have predicted how it ended。 I feel like I maybe was left with some questions about things that had been included in the story but didn’t seem to have an explanation but that didn’t have a massive impact on my overall enjoyment。The characters in this book are not really all that likeable but I felt entirely drawn to them because of their dynamic, you can tell there are some tensions from the start of the story but it gets worse as the events of the night unfold and there are some clear divides in the group, which makes for some intense reading。 Maybe this makes me weird but I found it riveting as the threat becomes known that we got to see how each of the friends reacts to this and how it changes their relationships with each other, the shift back and forth between working together and then working against each other kept the suspense at an all-time high。Holly Jackson knows how to create an emotional and engaging story, the sense of dread will definitely stick with me for a while, it is a dark story and it’ll take me a minute to get over, but this book has me very excited to see what kind of story she will come up with next。Originally posted on everywhere and nowhere 。。。more

I really enjoyed Holly Jackson's previous books so I was excited to see she had a brand new book out, that was going to be separate from her series。 However, this book really just disappointed me。 I just couldn't get into it。 I really disliked the narrator, and found the american accent to be incredibly whingey and whiney。 I wonder if I would have enjoyed the book better if I had just read it and not listened to it。 Not sure how much was my dislike of the narrator, or how much was the dislike of I really enjoyed Holly Jackson's previous books so I was excited to see she had a brand new book out, that was going to be separate from her series。 However, this book really just disappointed me。 I just couldn't get into it。 I really disliked the narrator, and found the american accent to be incredibly whingey and whiney。 I wonder if I would have enjoyed the book better if I had just read it and not listened to it。 Not sure how much was my dislike of the narrator, or how much was the dislike of the plot。I hope I enjoy her next book a lot better than this one! 。。。more

Six friends take off on a spring break road trip。 When their RV breaks down and they end up stuck in the middle of nowhere, they realize that maybe their breakdown in this location wasn't an accident。 They have to find a way to survive the night with danger outside the RV and possibly an even bigger danger inside。 This thriller kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time。 I couldn't read it at night because it made me too jumpy to sleep。 I really enjoyed how this story unfolded piece by piece Six friends take off on a spring break road trip。 When their RV breaks down and they end up stuck in the middle of nowhere, they realize that maybe their breakdown in this location wasn't an accident。 They have to find a way to survive the night with danger outside the RV and possibly an even bigger danger inside。 This thriller kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time。 I couldn't read it at night because it made me too jumpy to sleep。 I really enjoyed how this story unfolded piece by piece so that the reader was putting the details together at the same time as the characters did。 There were a few twists I saw coming, but others that completely caught me by surprise。 Highly recommend this one if you're looking for a twisty YA thriller。 Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Delacorte Press for the ARC of this book。 。。。more

After reading A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, I was really excited to read this one。 There were some things that lived up to my expectations and some that didn't。I read the first quarter of the book in one day。 It immediately grabbed me and legitimately scared me。 The 6 getting lost in their RV even before anything happened had me on the edge of my seat。 I had an inkling that the first flat tire was not an accident and I was right。 The scariest part to me was when they were all inside the RV and After reading A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, I was really excited to read this one。 There were some things that lived up to my expectations and some that didn't。I read the first quarter of the book in one day。 It immediately grabbed me and legitimately scared me。 The 6 getting lost in their RV even before anything happened had me on the edge of my seat。 I had an inkling that the first flat tire was not an accident and I was right。 The scariest part to me was when they were all inside the RV and they heard "hello。" I almost had to stop reading since it was night! After this, the pacing kind of slowed down。 Since the whole thing took place in one night, it really dragged some things out。 It took them forever to make one small decision and it took me several days to get through the middle of the book。 I did read the last I think 30% in one day。 Everything picked up and I was on the edge of my seat and couldn't read fast enough。 One of the things that bummed me out was that I didn't really like the characters。 I disliked the main character Red。 I wanted her to be someone I could root for, but I just was indifferent。 Her whole character revolved around her guilt。 The night her mom died, she called Red and asked to tell her dad something, but they were fighting so Red said "I hate you" and hung up。 Then she got shot。 So I think a lot of her character had to do with what that grief and guilt does to a person。 I hated Oliver, I couldn't stand a word that came out of this mouth。 I was very back and forth about Maddy, it really seemed like she was Red's ride or die but also seemed like she would always pick Oliver (her brother) over Red no matter what。 The rest of the characters were ok。The reason that these 6 characters were trapped here just threw me for loop after loop。 We think we have it figured out, but then it's something else, but that's wrong too and then it's something else。 I really can't say I saw any of it coming so it was a fun ride for me。 The very ending was a series of multi media type things which made for an interesting ending, but also didn't fully answer all the questions we had (not in a bad way)。 It left things to make up that could really go either way。Overall, despite the characters not being my favorites, this book really kept my intrigue especially at the beginning and end and really was something that was a fun, yet scary mystery thriller book!Thank you to Netgalley and Delacourte Press for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I don’t know how but Holly Jackson did it again。 She wrote another masterpiece。 This book was fast paced and it made me think the whole time。And I was surprised at how well the characters were developed for the book being just a standalone。 The main character Red was so cool I loved her。 I just wish she didn’t blame herself for everything。 And sometimes I was screaming at the book because one of the characters bro they made me want to throw the book but I didn’t。I also need to mention the ending I don’t know how but Holly Jackson did it again。 She wrote another masterpiece。 This book was fast paced and it made me think the whole time。And I was surprised at how well the characters were developed for the book being just a standalone。 The main character Red was so cool I loved her。 I just wish she didn’t blame herself for everything。 And sometimes I was screaming at the book because one of the characters bro they made me want to throw the book but I didn’t。I also need to mention the ending。 Like wth the last 100 pages were fxcking amazing。 I swear there was a new thing being revealed every second page。 And the last chapter was just, I can’t even say。 I loved it but I wish we got an epilogue 😭 Those are my raw thoughts after finishing five survive, I will literally read anything Holly Jackson writes。 。。。more
